Local fabrics are the in-thing in fashion today and Adire is not an exception. Recently it has enjoyed a new trend in its production – handmade prints are added making it more fashionable. Two years ago, who would have thought we would be making our jeans and skirts with Adire or any other local fabrics?
Perhaps more than any art form textile reflects the culture from which they come. The Adire textiles – which form an integral part of the Egba culture in Abeokuta – are a good way of showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage to other cultures and nations. The fabric with its frills of ethnicity speaks more of our cultural heritage and of late its recognition spreads beyond Nigeria borders. Designers are using it to make jeans, suits, dresses, you name it. The branding and packaging of the Adire in a ready-to-wear format makes it easily accessible and hassle free which means more and more designers are opting to use it instead of other fabrics.
The fad of this wearable art from Abeokuta is fast growing and gaining popularity. It’s traditional and modern, elaborate and elegant with a great feel of ethnicity. Prominent local designers who have joined the craze include Wilkor Creations, Dacosta Prints and Duduethnikz, among many.
Over the years, the fabric has gone through a remarkable transformation. The old fabric used to come in 5 yards or more and designers would decide what patterns they want to make on it. Today, they can incorporate prints of intricate design using rich and vibrant hues of opaque inks. The print gives the Adire a rich elaborate effect, making it look more like a painting. The fabric can now be used to make curtains, coverings for cushion chairs, pillow cases, table cloths and of course, dazzling ready-made outfits. If designers keep experimenting with this fabric like they’re doing now it won’t be long before we see Adire garments paraded at top fashion shows in London, Paris, Tokyo and New York.
