Bongeziwe Mabandla delivers contagious afro-folk tunes with a contemporary edge on this eccentric 6-track album. Umlilo, “Fire” or “The Cry”, has a serenity that makes one want to retreat to the tranquil hills of the Eastern Cape to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. Bongeziwe takes us on a journey of self-discovery, self-awareness and ultimately self-love as he poses questions like “Who Am I?” and “How do I become myself in post-apartheid South Africa?” He tells Arts Review that he wanted to challenge himself as a human being and value himself at the same time – something we should all be doing continuously. His inimitable sound and introspection almost reminds me of Madala Kunene’s spiritual rhythms, his calmness and wisdom, except Bongeziwe’s music is less intense, it’s groovier and it appeals to a younger crowd. Umlilo is deeply-rooted in traditional Xhosa music, but fuses it with modern-day sounds such as dub. Soothing guitar riffs are accompanied by haunting vocals, chanting and kick-ass drums. The album was produced by 340ml drummer Paulo Chibanga which explains the subtle yet unmistakably 340ml dub influence. Songs that stand out in the album include the gloomy “Isizathu”, spiritual “Hini” and upbeat “Ndibonisiwe”. Overall, Umlilo is a powerful, distinctive and emotive album that has longevity. You’ll definitely still be listening to this album in the coming years.
